If you’re like me and you’ve been looking for a wireless headset to play with your friends in Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch, you’re probably confused by what works and what does not.

For Fortnite specifically, I’ve been very happy with the SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless.

Why I like it:

  • It’s compatible with the Nintendo Switch’s wireless USB headset system
  • The small dongle plugs in nicely to the USB-C port on the bottom of the Switch for playing on the go.
  • A regular USB-A adapter cable is included so you can plug the USB-C dongle into the docking station of the Nintendo Switch to play with the headset on a TV

Some things to know before buying:

  • There is no Bluetooth capability.
  • Many Nintendo Switch games do not support voice chat via a USB headset. Fortnite is one of the few exceptions.
  • Many first-party Nintendo Switch titles (such as Mario Kart and Splatoon) support voice chat through the Nintendo smartphone app, for which this headset will not work. The headset does have an AUX cable to plug into your phone if it has a jack, but then you won’t be able to hear the game sounds from your TV. There is no “mixing” capability.
  • This headset is also compatible with PC, PS4 and certain Android phones with a USB-C port.

Did you know you can simply plug in your Apple EarPods or other wired earbuds into your Nintendo Switch to use them for Voice Chat in FortNite on the Nintendo Switch? This works great when you’re playing in handheld mode, but how do you use them when your Switch is docked and you’re playing on the TV?

Unless you want to sit within 1 foot of the TV, you’ll need an audio extension cord for your headphones.  Unfortunately, most extension cords do not support the microphone on the Apple EarPods.

You’ll want what’s called a 4-pole audio extension cable.  A 4-pole extension cable supports the left and right stereo channels as well as the microphone.  Most extension cables are only 3-pole and do not support the microphone.

This cable from KabelDirekt has been working very nicely for me.  I simply plug it into the Switch while it is docked and then plug my Apple EarPods into the other end.

You’re probably wondering how you can quickly adjust the volume?  Unfortunately, the Switch won’t recognize the button presses on the Apple EarPods’ remote control.  However, simply hold the Home button on your controller for 1 second and the “Quick Menu” will pop up on your screen.  Here, you can quickly change the volume.

Microphone not working when you start?  If the FortNite app has been sleeping in the background, you may need to unplug and re-plug the extension cable on the Switch so it recognize your headphones.

That’s it! A simple extension cable allows you to use your Apple EarPods for Voice Chat in FortNite without needing to buy an expensive gaming headset.

Looking for a dedicated headset? This headset from SteelSeries works nicely with the Nintendo Switch.
